Become a Foster Carer with Soundly Fostering
If you’re exploring fostering, we’ll meet you where you are and walk with you every step of the way.
Fostering is a meaningful decision. It brings questions, reflection, and sometimes uncertainty. Whatever has led you here, we’ll help you understand what’s involved in a way that feels steady, honest, and personal.
At Soundly Fostering, you won’t be passed between departments. You’ll speak directly with people who stay involved, people who know you, and understand the emotional reality of fostering.
Whether you’re ready to begin or simply curious, the first step is a conversation.

A Look at Your Fostering Journey
A Conversation
This first conversation is an informal discussion about your interest, your circumstances, and what fostering involves. No pressure, just an honest starting point.
Home Visit
We’ll visit you at home to get a sense of your environment, your routines, and the people in your household. During this visit, we’ll talk about your motivations, your lifestyle, your support network, what fostering might mean for everyone in your home, and how we might support you.
Preparation Training
You’ll attend our preparation training designed to explore the realities of fostering, children’s emotional needs, and the responsibilities involved. It’s there to help you decide whether fostering is right for you.
Your Assessment
A skilled social worker will work closely with you across several meetings. This stage is reflective and conversational, exploring your personal history, strengths, experiences, as well as your understanding of children’s emotional needs, and your capacity to offer stability.
Most assessments take around four months, but we adapt to your pace.
Checks & References
Statutory checks, including medical and DBS, are completed to ensure children’s safety. We guide you clearly through each step.
Panel & Approval
Your assessment is presented to our fostering panel, which is a group of experienced professionals who approach each application thoughtfully and respectfully. You’ll attend this meeting and most carers find this far more supportive and straightforward than they expected.
What It Takes to Be a Foster Carer

Personal Qualities
Patience, warmth, and empathy
Resilience and emotional stability
Commitment to supporting a child's growth
Willingness to reflect and learn
Openness to working with social workers and birth families
Practical Requirements

The Support and Training Soundly Fostering Provides
Support at Soundly is a relationship, not a checklist.
You’ll receive reflective supervision that gives you space to think and make sense of what’s happening for the child and for you. We remain present in the everyday rhythm of fostering and are available out of hours when you need advice or reassurance.
Training is practical and grounded in real-life situations. It focuses on understanding children’s emotional needs, building confidence, and strengthening reflective thinking.
You won’t be expected to manage difficult moments alone. We stay alongside you.
Allowances & Financial Support
We believe in being open about allowances.
We value the dedication of our foster carers, and allowances are designed to reflect that commitment.
Depending on the type of fostering arrangement, allowances ensure you can meet a child’s needs while recognizing your time and care.
Fostering also benefits from generous UK tax relief under the Government’s Qualifying Care Relief scheme, meaning many carers pay little or no income tax on their fostering income.
There is more to understand around tax, self-employment, and record-keeping, and we’ll guide you through it all clearly and steadily. You won’t be left to figure it out on your own.
If you’d like to talk through allowances in more detail, we’re happy to explain how it works in your situation.
